Creating a DNS Zone
Creating a DNS Zone
Updated over a week ago

Using this tutorial, we are going to cover the process of creating a primary zone step by step. Create a zone by performing the following steps:

  1. Define basic zone properties.

  2. Add records to the zone.

  3. Save the zone.

  4. Switch DNS service providers.

Step 1: Define Basic Zone Properties

Click Add New Zone from the Routing page.

A new zone's name is the most important setting when defining it. It identifies the area of the DNS namespace that our name servers will be authoritative for when it comes to the DNS queries that they will be tasked with responding to. Therefore, our name servers will be able to provide authoritative answers to DNS queries relating to that particular namespace. In the example below, the zone name is "example.com." Once this zone has been created, recursive name servers will be able to forward DNS queries for the domain that is named "example.com."

In the Domain Name option, enter the desired zone name and click the Create Zone button.

As soon as you click on the Create Zone button, a page will appear with the zone's properties and a tutorial on how to activate it.

Step 2: Add Records

Adding records to the zone is the next step in the process. This allows the traffic going to your web servers to be resolved correctly. For example, we can resolve a hostname to an IP address using address records.

Step 3: Switch DNS Service Providers

After the zone has been configured, we recommend that you point the name server at your domain registrar to either the Route-branded name server or the vanity name server, depending on your preference.
